Scott Hunter Assoc CIPD, MCMI - Managing Director
I joined HM Prison Service in 1993 and worked in an in several establishments, until becoming a national trainer in 2007. This provided me with grounding in the use of soft skills in a challenging and fast moving environment. Understanding the importance of managing stress, being assertive and effective time management to enable me to perform my duties on a daily basis.
Working in an establishment you have to operate to tight schedules and deal with any incidents as they arise. This is a very fluid workplace, and traditional time management solutions were not effective. Gaining an understanding how to prioritise my workload and re-evaluate that constantly as other demands arose. This provided me with an insight into linking work to operational requirements and the mission of the Service, and developing systems to be able to track what was on my work radar to enable effective decision making.
I developed assertiveness skills, and an understanding that one size does not fit all. Working with prisoners and staff of widely different personalities and perceptions taught me to appreciate the need to be flexible in approach. Assertiveness is not just one way of dealing with issues, but instead an understanding of the required outcome and selecting the most appropriate method to achieve this. As a national trainer for 4 years I delivered operational and professional development courses. Some of these were very challenging in the content and assessments, an example being crisis negotiator training. Facilitating this helped me to develop an understanding of stress management and the impact it can have on individuals. Working with delegates to learn to develop personal coping startegies and identifying individual triggers.
